How to change between Item Mode and Point mode in Switch Control

At some points it may be more beneficial to the user to use a scanning method that selects things by an item or group of items instead of lining up crosshairs over an item and vice versa. Currently Apple has not provided a manual toggle in the settings to make this change so it does need to be done directly through the use of Switch Control.

The following processes will be to make this as easy as possible so follow along in order in order to change scanning modes:

    Change Tap Behavior:

    • This will make it so you always get the Scanner Menu when you make selections. Making it easier to access the option to change modes.
    1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Switch Control > Tap Behavior
    2. Select Default
    3. Now press “< Switch Control” at the top to go back

    Add Items to Scanner Menu:

    • This adds the option to change between Item and Point Mode
    1. While in the settings for Switch Control select “Menu Items” > Top Level
    2. Tap on the option Cursor Mode so that it has a check mark beside it
    3. Now press “< Menu Items” and “< Switch Control” at the top to go back

    Switch for selection:

    • This setup allows you to use the screen as a switch instead of using the NeuroNode if the NeuroNode is not currently available due to needing charge etc.
    • While this is setup and Switch Control is on you cannot tap on the screen so remember that you can press the Home button at the bottom of the device 3 times to turn off/on Switch Control
    • Skip this section if you will be using the NeuroNode to make selections
    1. While in the settings for Switch Control select “Switches”
    2. Select “Add New Switch…” > Screen > Full Screen > Select Item
    3. Now press “< Switches” and “< Switch Control” at the top to go back

We are now ready and able to change modes after changing modes all options can be changed back to their previous settings.

    Changing Modes:

    1. Turn on Switch Control
    2. Use your switch to make a selection on the screen
      1. This can be anywhere on any screen
    3. You will get a small pop up box where you made the selection that says Tap. After a moment the scanner will scan to the dots located below “Tap” by wrapping a white oval around them. Make a switch when this happens to move to the next page of the Scanner Menu
    4. On the next page make a switch when Item Mode or Point Mode is highlighted in White
    5. This will change the scanning mode to the mode that was just selected and should immediately reflect this change.

Reverting changes to settings from previous steps:

    1. Turn Off Switch Control
    2. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Switch Control > Tap Behavior
    3. Select Auto-Tap
    4. Now press “< Switch Control” at the top to go back
    5. While in the settings for Switch Control select “Menu Items” > Top Level
    6. Tap on the option Cursor Mode so that it no longer has a check mark beside it
    7. Now press “< Menu Items” and “< Switch Control” at the top to go back

(If you did not setup the screen as a switch you are done making changes. Otherwise continue with the following steps)

    1. While in the settings for Switch Control select “Switches”
    2. Select “Edit” at the top
    3. Tap the red circle beside the option “Full Screen”
    4. Tap the “Delete” option that pulled up on the right
    5. Select “Done” at the top

You have now successfully changed between Item and Point Mode and reverted the settings that were changed to make that change!
